Culture Calendar #49: Picks For The Week
Wanna know what's on in London this week? Look no further...
w/c 11th December
What: ABBA: Super Troupers
Where: Royal Festival Hall
When: Monday 18th
Who doesn’t love ABBA? That’s right, no one. Even Colin Firth badly lip-syncing on a Greek island hasn’t waned our adoration for the Swedish outfit. Narrated by Jarvis Cocker, through nine highly immersive rooms, this is a one of a kind exhibition with access to never-seen-before items of memorabilia, footage and iconic costumes. Perfect for some pre-Christmas culture; the exhibition continues until 29th April 2018.
What: Peter Doig
Where: Michael Werner Gallery
When: Tuesday 19th December
This is probably your last chance to see exceptional contemporary art before Christmas. Michael Werner Galley will present an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Peter Doig. Born in Edinburgh and rising to fame in the 80s, Doig is one of the most revered living figurative artists, particularly well known for his ‘White Canoe’ painting. This is the first London exhibition of new works by the artist since 2012 and the show will continue until 17th February 2018.
What: Sleeping Trees & The Chocolate Factory: Christmas Special
Where: Battersea Arts Centre
When: Tuesday 19th – 23rd
Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka was weird wasn't he? Well, this Christmas, physical comedy trio the Sleeping Trees are performing their own version of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and they may be giving Burton and his team a run for their money. With great reviews from Time Out and Three Weeks, the show is only on for one week, running until Saturday 23rd.
What: The Prodigy
Where: Brixton Academy
When: Thursday 21st
This is the first of three nights at Brixton’s finest venue. Electronic super-band The Prodigy are bringing their hard-hitting mix of techno, electro, rave and punk to the O2 just before you fill up on Christmas food and physically can’t move away from Love Actually. Their live performances are second to none - expect dramatic light shows, pyrotechnics and very, very loud music.
What: Detroit Swindle (All Night Long)
When: Friday 22nd
Tung favourites Detroit Swindle are back at Phonox for another extended set. Expect much of the same with the Amsterdam duo due to start as early as 10 pm. This really is a no-brainer and if you are diligent followers of this Culture Calendar, then it provides the perfect balance after a night of aggressive headbanging at Brixton Academy the evening before (see above). If you're a DS newbie, check out a track called: The Wrap Around.
